Reeves, Sir Paul

Reeves, Sir Paul (1932-2011), was governor general of New Zealand from 1985 to 1990. He was the first person of Māori descent to hold the office.

Reeves was born on Dec. 6, 1932, in Wellington, New Zealand. He became a deacon in the Anglican church in 1958. From 1971 to 1979, Reeves was bishop of Waiapu. He was then made bishop of Auckland. In 1980, at the age of 48, he became the youngest archbishop of New Zealand. He held that position until 1985 and was the first Māori in that post. He was knighted in 1986. Reeves died on Aug. 14, 2011.
