Regina, << rih JEE nuh, >> Medal is an award honoring a person for a lifetime contribution to children’s literature. The award is sponsored by the Catholic Library Association and is given regardless of nationality or creed (see Catholic Library Association (CLA)). The face of the medal bears a crown superimposed on an M, signifying Mary, for whom the medal is named. The words “Regina Medal, Continued Distinguished Contribution to Children’s Literature,” encircle the symbols. On the reverse side, names of the winner, the sponsor, and the year encircle a shield that bears a quotation from Walter de la Mare’s collection of poems Bells and Grass (1941). The quotation reads: “… only the rarest kind of best in anything can be good enough for the young.” See also Literature for children.
