Reid, Whitelaw

Reid << reed >>, Whitelaw (1837-1912), was an American journalist and diplomat. He bought control of the New York Tribune in 1872. From 1905 until his death he served as ambassador to Britain.

Reid was born on Oct. 27, 1837, in Xenia, Ohio. During the Civil War (1861-1865), he was war correspondent for the Cincinnati Gazette. In 1892, Reid was the Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States, but he was defeated. He died on Dec. 15, 1912.
