Thomson Reuters, << ROY tuhrz, >> is one of the world’s largest news services. It serves more than 100 countries. Its coverage of the financial world is particularly strong. Thomson Reuters provides information to banks, brokers, and corporations, in addition to providing news services to other media groups. The company’s headquarters are in New York City.

Thomson Reuters was created with the merger of two news organizations, Thomson and Reuters, in 2008. The Reuters news service was founded in London in 1851 by Baron de Reuter, a German journalist (see Reuter, Baron de ). It started as a financial service and expanded in 1858 to furnish general news as well. The first major news event covered by Reuters was the American Civil War (1861-1865). Thomson was founded in Canada in the 1930’s. After founder Roy Thomson purchased a radio station in 1931, the company soon branched out into newspaper ownership. Thomson also added reference publishing and television stations to its holdings. By the early 2000’s, the company had become one of the world’s largest information services, specializing in business information.
