Rice, Grantland

Rice, Grantland (1880-1954), was the first United States newspaperman to gain fame by writing about sports. He wrote about the American golfer Bobby Jones, the American boxing champion Jack Dempsey, the American tennis champion Bill Tilden, the American tennis champion Helen Wills, and other sports champions during the 1920’s. His autobiography, The Tumult and the Shouting, was published in 1954. Grantland Rice was born on Nov. 1, 1880, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He died on July 13, 1954.
