Richards, Sir William Buell, << BOO uhl >> (1815-1889), a Canadian lawyer and statesman, served as the first chief justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1875 to 1879. His judicial career began in 1853 when he was appointed to the Court of Common Pleas of Canada West (now Ontario). He rose to become chief justice of Ontario in 1868, and then was called to head the newly established Supreme Court. He also served as attorney general of Canada from 1851 to 1853. Richards was born on May 2, 1815, in Brockville, Ontario. He died on Jan. 26, 1889.
