Riemenschneider, Tilman

Riemenschneider, << REE muhn `shny` dur, >> Tilman (1460?-1531), was one of the best-known sculptors of his day in Germany. Riemenschneider carved in both stone and wood. He was the first German woodcarver to leave the surfaces of his works unpainted. Riemenschneider worked in a late Gothic style, with elaborate drapery and weightless figures. Most of his sculpture is concerned with religious subjects. Riemenschneider’s work is noted for its quiet religious feeling.

Riemenschneider was born about 1460 in Thuringia. He studied his trade in several German cities before settling in Wurzburg. He spent most of his life there, becoming a prominent citizen and a member of the Wurzburg city council. Riemenschneider died on July 7, 1531.
