Rio Grande Project

Rio Grande, << REE oh GRAND, >> Project is a United States federal flood-control, power, and irrigation project that extends along the Rio Grande from Elephant Butte Reservoir in southern New Mexico into western Texas. The U.S. Congress authorized the project in 1905. Elephant Butte Dam was completed in New Mexico in 1916. The project also includes the Caballo Dam and Reservoir, six diversion dams and more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) of canals and ditches. It irrigates 178,000 acres (72,000 hectares) in New Mexico and Texas. Under a 1906 treaty, the project also irrigates 20,000 acres (8,100 hectares) in Mexico.
