Rome, University of, is the largest university in Italy. Its official name is the Sapienza University of Rome. The University of Rome was founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII. During the 1500’s, it became famous as a center for the study of medicine and other sciences. The Italian government has controlled the university since 1870.
