Rook, also called Eurasian rook, is a bird found in Europe and Asia. The rook is a kind of crow. Unlike other crows, however, the rook has a purple gloss on its black plumage. It feeds primarily on insects and grain. When rooks reach adulthood, about 1 year of age, they shed the feathers of their face, which then becomes a grayish-white color. Rooks measure about 18 inches (46 centimeters) long.
Rooks nest in communities of many hundreds, known as rookeries. Rooks that nest in central Europe remain in the same region the year around. Those that nest farther north migrate southward for the winter. Tame rooks sometimes learn to imitate human speech.
