Roulette, << roo LEHT, >> is a popular game in gambling casinos. A roulette table consists of a wheel located at one end and a betting layout extending across the rest of the table surface. There are 38 symbols around the circumference of the wheel, numbered 1 through 36 plus a 0 and 00. Many wheels in Europe do not have 00. Each symbol has an identical small slot on the wheel. The numbers are marked on a background alternately of red and black, with the 0 and 00 on a green background.
Players bet by placing chips on the betting layout. Players are given their own color chips to avoid confusion. Then the dealer, often called the croupier, rotates the wheel while spinning a small white ball on the rim of the wheel in the direction opposite that of the turning wheel. The ball finally drops into a slot, whose symbol and color become the winner for that spin. Players can bet on the red or black colors, a single symbol, or combinations of symbols.
