Shell plc

Shell plc (public limited company) is a global energy company that operates in many countries. The company grew out of an alliance made in 1907 between a Dutch company called the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company and a British oil company called the Shell Transport and Trading Company (formerly the Tank Syndicate). Shell has its headquarters in London, England.

Shell’s major activities involve oil and gas exploration and production, power generation, and the manufacturing, marketing, and shipping of oil products and chemicals. Shell is also involved in developing renewable energy sources.

Beginning in the late 1900’s, the company was involved in a series of oil spills in the Niger Delta region in Nigeria. In 2011, the company accepted responsibility for much of the damage caused by those spills. In 2015, Shell agreed to pay nearly $84 million for two oil spills that occurred in the community of Bodo in the Ogoniland region in 2008 and 2009.
