Royal Household of the United Kingdom includes officials who conduct the private business of the monarch and supervise court life. They have few powers of government. The Private Secretary’s Office supports the monarch in handling correspondence, speeches, and the other official duties as head of state. The Lord Chamberlain’s Office supervises ceremonial activities. The Master of the Household’s Department administers royal residences and staff. The Privy Purse and Treasurer’s Office manages household finance. The Royal Collection Trust is responsible for the care and preservation of the artworks in the Royal Collection. The household also includes personal attendants who assist the monarch.
The original household offices, such as marshal, steward, and chamberlain, are hereditary in some families. These officials act only on ceremonial occasions.
