Ruff is a sandpiper native to the Eastern Hemisphere. Ruffs range in color from black and chestnut to buff and whitish. During the mating season, the male develops a tuft of feathers on its neck that it can erect into a ruff. The female, called a reeve, has more modest plumage than the male. Ruffs are occasionally seen on the East Coast of North America.
