Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. The structure is at 50th Street and Fifth Avenue, facing Rockefeller Center in New York City. The cathedral was designed by the American architect James Renwick, Jr., and constructed between 1858 and 1879. Renwick later added a parish house and the bishop’s residence.
Renwick’s design was inspired by medieval Gothic architecture. For example, the cathedral spires recall the spires on the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. The vaults (covered roofs) resemble those of York Minster and Winchester Cathedral in the United Kingdom. See also New York City (A visitor’s guide).
