Samothrace

Samothrace << SAM uh `thrays` >>, also called Samothraki << `sah` maw THRAH kee >>, is a Greek island that is often mentioned in Greek mythology. The island covers 69 square miles (178 square kilometers) in the Aegean Sea. It has a population of about 2,600. Tourism and the production of olives and fruit are the leading industries. Ruins found on Samothrace date from 500 B.C. In 1863, the famous statue of the Winged Victory of Samothrace was found on the island (see Winged Victory).
