Satrap, << SAY trap or SAT rap, >> was the governor of a satrapy (province) in the ancient Persian Empire. The satrap also served as tax collector and chief judge of the province. Each satrap maintained a separate force of bodyguards. Satraps continued to rule after Alexander the Great conquered the empire in 331 B.C.
