Sawrey, Hugh (1919?-1999), an Australian artist, became famous for his realistic paintings of the Australian outback. Critics have called him the finest chronicler of life in the Australian bush in the history of Australian painting. Sawrey was also known for his action paintings of horses and people.
Hugh David Sawrey was born in Forest Glen, near Buderim, on March 3, probably in 1919, though some sources say 1923. He was educated in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He left school at the age of 14 and worked on cattle stations from the Culgoa and Diamantina River to the Gulf Country. He wrote about his travels throughout northern Australia during the early 1990’s in Outback (1993). Sawrey died on June 10, 1999.
