Scalia << skuh LEE yuh >> , Antonin (1936-2016), was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States . President Ronald Reagan nominated him in 1986 to fill the vacancy created when Justice William H. Rehnquist became chief justice .
As a Supreme Court justice, Scalia became known for his conservative views on many issues. His judicial opinions and his writings led many Supreme Court observers to regard him as the intellectual leader of the court’s conservative wing.
Antonin Gregory Scalia was born on March 11, 1936, in Trenton, New Jersey. He graduated from Georgetown University in 1957 and from Harvard Law School in 1960. He practiced law in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1961 to 1967 and later taught at the University of Virginia and University of Chicago law schools. In the 1970’s, Scalia held several positions in the executive branch, including assistant attorney general in the U.S. Department of Justice . In 1982, Reagan appointed him a judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Scalia died on Feb. 13, 2016. A son, Eugene Scalia, served as secretary of labor under President Donald J. Trump from 2019 to 2021.
