Scott Air Force Base, near Belleville, Illinois, is headquarters of the United States Transportation Command and the Air Force Network Integration Center. The Transportation Command includes the Navy’s Military Sealift Command, the Army’s Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, and the Air Force’s Air Mobility Command. An Air Force general heads both the Transportation Command and the Air Mobility Command. Scott Air Force Base was established in 1917 and covers about 3,500 acres (1,400 hectares). It was named for Corporal Frank S. Scott, the first enlisted U.S. soldier to die in an aircraft accident.
