Semiramis, << sih MIHR uh mihs >>, was a mythical queen of Assyria. She supposedly founded the ancient city of Babylon, and conquered Persia (Iran) and Egypt. She was the daughter of a Syrian youth and a fish goddess. Her mother left her, and she was fed by doves. Semiramis grew to be a beautiful woman and married King Ninus of Assyria. She became queen when he died, and won many battles, but her son overthrew her. Herodotus mentions a Semiramis who was queen of Babylon in the 700’s B.C.
