Sheepdog is any of a number of breeds of dogs that people use to herd other animals. Sheepdogs return wandering animals to the herd and keep the herd together. Sheepdogs also defend the herd from attacks by wolves and other animals. In the past, the word sheepdog described dogs bred to herd only sheep. Today, the word is also used for dogs that herd other animals, including geese, ducks, cattle, and even reindeer. Sheepdogs are loyal, gentle, and intelligent.
