Sierra Madre, << MAHD ray, >> is the name of three mountain ranges in Mexico. The ranges are Sierra Madre Oriental, Sierra Madre Occidental, and Sierra Madre del Sur. The name Sierra Madre means “mother range” in Spanish.
The Sierra Madre Oriental forms the eastern edge of a central plateau. Its peaks rise about 13,000 feet (4,000 meters) above sea level. The Sierra Madre Occidental forms the plateau’s western edge. It consists of rugged volcanic mountains usually reaching 7,500 to 10,000 feet (2,300 to 3,050 meters) high. The Sierra Madre del Sur rises to 11,500 feet (3,500 meters) in southern Mexico. Sierra Madre is also the name of mountain ranges in the Philippines and Wyoming.
