Slim, Sir William (1891-1970), was a British army commander in World War II (1939-1945) and governor general of Australia from 1953 to 1960. During the war, he fought in Sudan, Syria, Iran, and Iraq, and then took command of British forces in Burma (now Myanmar). These forces were disheartened because of repeated defeats by the Japanese, but Slim restored morale, reorganized his army, and led it to victory.
Slim was born on Aug. 6, 1891, in Bristol, England. During World War I (1914-1918), he fought in France, Gallipoli, and Mesopotamia. Slim became a viscount in 1960. He died on Dec. 14, 1970, in London.
