Southampton << sowth AMP tuhn >> Island is an island in Canada’s territory of Nunavut. It lies between Hudson Bay and Foxe Basin. It is 210 miles (338 kilometers) long and 150 miles (241 kilometers) wide, and covers 15,913 square miles (41,214 square kilometers). Cliffs rise about 1,300 feet (400 meters) on the island’s rugged northern shore. The southern area is tundra (cold, dry, treeless marshland). About 1,040 people live in Coral Harbour, the island’s only community. The island has two bird sanctuaries.
