Southern Baptist Convention is a large Baptist denomination. The Convention has about 16 million members who worship in tens of thousands of churches in the United States. Southern Baptists sponsor thousands of home missionaries who serve the United States, Canada, Guam, and the Caribbean. The organization also sponsors thousands of foreign missionaries in other countries.
The Southern Baptist Convention has conventions and fellowships in many states that help support numerous seminaries, colleges, and universities, as well as Bible schools and academies. The state conventions also help support hospitals, children’s homes, and homes for the aged. Many of the denomination’s offices are in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Southern Baptist Convention was organized in Augusta, Georgia, in 1845. For more information about Baptist doctrine and history, see Baptists.
