Spawn

Spawn is a word that refers to the eggs of fishes, mollusks, amphibians, and other animals. Usually such eggs are produced in great numbers because many are eaten by aquatic animals. The eggs do not have shells and must be kept in water to prevent them from drying out. The eggs of certain fishes, particularly the sturgeon, are used to make caviar. Spawn from fishes is also called roe, particularly when used as human food.
