Spice Girls were a British pop music act who became international celebrities during the 1990’s for their recordings and their glamorous lifestyle. The members of the group were Melanie Chisholm or Sporty Spice, Melanie Brown or Scary Spice, Victoria Adams or Posh Spice, and Emma Bunton or Baby Spice. Another member, Geri Halliwell or Ginger Spice, left the group in 1998. Victoria performed under the name of Victoria Beckham after marrying the English football (soccer) star David Beckham.
Before forming as the Spice Girls in 1995, all the members of the group had worked as backup singers and dancers. In 1996, the Spice Girls’ recording of “Wannabe” became the first debut single by a British girl group to go straight to the top of the United Kingdom charts as the number one song in the country. With their “Girl Power” catch phrase and flashy and sexy look, they became a worldwide pop phenomenon. The group made one motion picture, the musical Spice World: The Movie (1997). By the early 2000’s, members of the group were making solo recordings. Since 2007, members of the group have reunited a number of times to perform together.
