Statue of Liberty National Monument

Statue of Liberty National Monument is on Ellis and Liberty islands in New York Harbor. The colossal statue by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi stands on Liberty Island. The people of France presented it to the United States minister to France in Paris on July 4, 1884. The statue was dedicated in 1886. The site was designated a national monument in 1924. Ellis Island was an immigration station until 1954. It became part of the monument in 1965. The Statue of Liberty Museum, with exhibits that include the statue’s original torch, opened on Liberty Island in 2019. See also Ellis Island ; Statue of Liberty .
