Steenbok, << STEEN bok, >> also spelled steinbok, is a small antelope that lives in southern and east-central Africa. Its name means brick buck in Afrikaans and refers to the steenbok’s reddish color. Adult steenboks stand about 21 inches (53 centimeters) high at the shoulders. They weigh about 24 pounds (11 kilograms). Males have short, straight horns and females are hornless. Steenboks usually live alone in open woodlands. They remain within a specific area called a territory. Steenboks feed on plant leaves, shoots, flowers, fruits, and seed pods. Steenboks can survive without drinking water because they get moisture from eating plants.
