Stephen, George

Stephen, George (1829-1921), was a Canadian financier. He was one of the founders, and the first president, of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Stephen was born in Dufftown, Scotland, on June 5, 1829. He went to Canada in 1850 and became a cloth manufacturer in Montreal. In 1876, Stephen became president of the Bank of Montreal. In 1880, he became a member of the company that built the Canadian Pacific, Canada’s first transcontinental railway. Stephen moved to England in 1888. He was made Baron Mount Stephen in 1891. Stephen died on Nov. 29, 1921.
