Stillwater, Minnesota (pop. 19,394), is one of the state’s earliest settlements. It lies in southeast Minnesota, on the boundary with Wisconsin. It is near the mouth of the St. Croix River, at a point where the river widens into a lake.
Stillwater was established in 1843. For many years, it served as an important logging center for lumbering in the nearby pine forests. It is called the Birthplace of Minnesota. The convention that petitioned Congress to form the territory of Minnesota met there in 1848. Congress created the Minnesota Territory the following year.
Stillwater’s historical importance and its beautiful river setting attract many tourists. The city has a mayor-council form of government.
