Stilt is a wading bird with long, slender legs. These slender legs make it look as if it walks on stilts. Stilts live in both the Eastern and Western hemispheres.
The black-necked stilt, the only American stilt, is about 15 inches (38 centimeters) long. The upper part of the bird’s body is black, and the underpart is white. Its long legs are bright red.
The stilt builds its nest by lining a low place in the ground with grasses. The female lays three or four eggs of an olive or buff color, thickly spotted with chocolate tones. Stilts live along shallow ponds in freshwater and saltwater marshes. See also Avocet.
