Stockton, Richard (1730-1781), was a New Jersey signer of the Declaration of Independence. He served in the Continental Congress in 1776. The British captured him that same year, during the Revolutionary War in America. Stockton was imprisoned in New York, where he suffered harsh treatment from which he never fully recovered. He remained an invalid for the rest of his life. A statue of Stockton represents New Jersey in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Stockton was born in Princeton, New Jersey.
