Stone, Thomas (1743-1787), was a Maryland signer of the Declaration of Independence. Although he favored independence for the colonists, he urged negotiation with Britain instead of war. Stone served in the Second Continental Congress and helped frame the Articles of Confederation. He was elected to the Maryland Senate three times. He died during his third term. Stone was born in Charles County, Maryland, and studied law at Annapolis. He died on Oct. 5, 1787.
