Stopes, Marie Carmichael

Stopes, Marie Carmichael (1880-1958), a British scientist and author, is best known for her pioneering work in family planning. She founded a birth control clinic and was president of the Society for Constructive Birth Control and Racial Progress. Her writings dealt mainly with problems in marriage.

Stopes was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Oct. 15, 1880. She was educated at University College, London. She was the first woman to join the scientific staff of Manchester University. She died on Oct. 2, 1958.
