Strait

Strait is a narrow waterway connecting two larger bodies of water. Many wars have been fought and many treaties negotiated for control and use of important straits. These include the Strait of Gibraltar between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, and the straits of Bosporus and Dardanelles between the Mediterranean and Black seas. The Strait of Magellan at the tip of South America is the only strait between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The terms strait, passage, and channel are often used in place of one another. See the separate articles in World Book on the various straits, such as Gibraltar, Strait of .
