Stromboli, << STROM buh lee, >> is an Italian island in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the northeastern coast of Sicily. The island covers 4.6 square miles (12.1 square kilometers) and has a few hundred inhabitants. It is famous for its volcano, which rises 3,031 feet (924 meters) high. The volcano is one of the few in Europe that are constantly active. Ancient writers reported this activity centuries ago. Disastrous eruptions rarely occur because the lava flows freely instead of building up internal pressure for violent eruptions.
