Suit. People who seek the help of a court of law to enforce their rights are said to “bring suit.” Someone who has suffered injury at the hands of another may bring suit for damages. A person may also bring suit to recover property, to collect money, to enforce the terms of a contract, or to accomplish one of many other purposes. A governmental unit may bring suit in the same way as a private person or a corporation. In general, a suit is any civil action brought before a court of law. Criminal cases are not called suits.
