Sulzberger, Arthur Ochs

Sulzberger, << SUHLZ bur guhr, >> Arthur Ochs (1926-2012), was the publisher of The New York Times from 1963 until his retirement in 1992. Under his leadership, the Times modernized its layout and type style and added several regular feature sections to increase its appeal to both advertisers and readers. In 1980, the Times began a national edition. In 1973, Sulzberger was elected chairman of the newspaper’s parent firm, the New York Times Company. He remained chairman after retiring as publisher. Sulzberger was succeeded as publisher by his son, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr.

Arthur Ochs Sulzberger was born in New York City on Feb. 5, 1926. He served as an assistant treasurer of the Times before becoming its publisher. His grandfather Adolph S. Ochs was publisher of the Times from 1896 to 1935. Sulzberger’s father, Arthur Hays Sulzberger, served as publisher from 1935 to 1961. Arthur Ochs Sulzberger died on Sept. 29, 2012.
