Surtees, John (1934-2017), a British motorcyclist and racing driver, was the world champion for 500 cc (cubic centimeter capacity) motorcycling in 1956, 1958, 1959, and 1960. He was also the world champion for 350 cc motorcycling in 1958, 1959, and 1960. At the end of 1960, he retired from motorcycling and took up motorcar racing. He won the Grand Prix world racing championship in 1964. Surtees designed and built his own racing car in 1970. Surtees was born on Feb. 11, 1934, in Tatsfield, Surrey. He died on March 10, 2017.
