Sutcliffe, Bert (1923-2001), a New Zealand cricket player, was a brilliant left-handed opening batsman. He played his first Test match for New Zealand in 1946. He represented his country on tours of Australia, the United Kingdom, India, Pakistan, and South Africa. He scored more than 17,000 runs in first-class cricket. In the 1952-1953 season, he scored 385 for Otago against Canterbury. This score was the highest ever made by a left-hander. Sutcliffe was also a competent slow left-arm bowler. He was born on Nov. 17, 1923, in Auckland, in the North Island of New Zealand. He died on April 20, 2001.
