Tacloban (pop. 251,881) is the chief city of the island of Leyte in the Philippines. It overlooks the San Juanico Strait that separates the northeast corner of Leyte from Samar. The city is the trading center and chief port for an area that produces abacá, a plant grown for its fiber; coconuts; rice; and tobacco. In November 2013, the city was severely damaged in Typhoon Haiyan.
