Daegu

Daegu << dy goo >>, also spelled Taegu, is one of the largest cities in South Korea. The municipality of Daegu has a population of 2,410,700. A municipality may include rural areas as well as the urban center. Daegu lies in southern South Korea. The city is a commercial and educational center.

Daegu stands on a fertile plain and is surrounded by huge mountains on the north and south. Its landmarks include the Dalseong fortress, which dates from the A.D. 200’s, and many Confucian shrines. The city has two universities, a women’s college, and several technical schools. Buddhist monasteries lie in the mountains around Daegu. The city ranks as South Korea’s largest producer of textiles, and it is a market for farm products and minerals of its area.

Korean people had established a settlement on the site of what is now Daegu by A.D. 366. Daegu became a major commercial center in the 1400’s.
