Taylor, John Henry (1871-1963), was one of the pioneers of professional golf in the United Kingdom. He won the British Open Championship for the first time in 1894. He won four more open championships, in 1895, 1900, 1909, and 1913. He also finished second in the open six times. He also finished second in the United States Open in 1900. Taylor helped found the association that became the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of the United Kingdom. He became the association’s first president in 1901.
Taylor was born on March 19, 1871, in Northam, Devon. He turned professional at the age of 19. He wrote an autobiography, Golf: My Life’s Work (1943). Taylor died on Feb. 10, 1963.
