Te Wīata, Īnia (1915-1971), a New Zealand singer, was the first Māori to become an internationally known opera star. He gained an international reputation during the 1950’s, appearing in leading roles in musicals, television, and films, as well as opera. A bass baritone, Te Wīata sang for several seasons at the Royal Opera House in London. He also recorded many Māori folk songs.
Te Wīata was born in Otaki, on the North Island of New Zealand. He was educated at Otaki Native College, before it was closed down in 1939. Later, he won a scholarship to Trinity College of Music in London. Te Wīata died in London on June 26, 1971.
