Tendulkar, Sachin

Tendulkar, Sachin (1973-…), an Indian cricket star, ranks among the most technically gifted players in the history of the sport. Tendulkar became a national legend in India, where cricket is enormously popular. He retired in November 2013 as a player in a Test match against the West Indies, and his final appearance stimulated an outpouring of emotion that gripped the entire country.

Tendulkar was a right-handed batsman with an impressive range of strokes. He served as captain of India’s national cricket team in 1996 and 1997 and again from 1999 to early 2000. Teldulkar showed great talent for cricket at a young age and made his Test debut in 1989 at the age of 16. His first Test hundred came when he was 17. He had 16 Test hundreds by the time he was 25. In 2000, he became the first batsman to score 50 international hundreds. In 2010, Tendulkar scored the first one-day double century (200 runs) in the history of cricket. He holds the world record for hundreds in both Tests and One Day Internationals (ODI) and is the only cricketer to pass the 15,000-run mark in the ODI format. In 2012, Tendulkar became the first cricketer to score 100 centuries in international competition. In a career that lasted almost 25 years, Tendulkar scored more than 34,000 runs. He was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1997 and International Cricket Council Player of the Year in 2010.

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was born on April 24, 1973, in Mumbai. In 2012, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha (Council of States), the upper house of the Parliament of India.
