Tennessee, University of

Tennessee, University of, is a state-assisted institution of higher education. Its largest campus, in Knoxville, is a land-grant university. A land-grant university is partly endowed by the United States government under the Morrill, or Land-Grant, Act of 1862. Athletic teams at the Knoxville campus are called the Volunteers. The University of Tennessee system also includes campuses in Chattanooga and Martin, the Health Science Center in Memphis, and the Space Institute in Tullahoma. The university was founded in 1794 as Blount College. It received its present name in 1879.

The University of Tennessee operates a number of research facilities. The main agricultural experiment station is in Knoxville. The Space Institute in Tullahoma offers programs in aviation systems, engineering, mathematics, and physics.
