Tenrec

Tenrec is the name of about 30 species of small mammals that live primarily in Madagascar. There are two main types, shrew tenrecs and hedgehog tenrecs. They vary widely in appearance and habitat. Shrew tenrecs have a long tail and soft fur. Hedgehog tenrecs have a short tail or no tail at all, and stiff, needlelike spines on the back. Some tenrecs live in trees, some live underground, and others are aquatic.

Tenrecs range in size from about 11/2 to 15 inches (4 to 38 centimeters) long. They have small eyes, small ears, and a long nose with long whiskers. Tenrecs eat small animals, especially insects and earthworms. Some species also eat fruits and other plant material. Most tenrecs move about at night and sleep during the day. Tenrecs may hibernate during periods of dry or cool weather for up to six months.
