Thompson, Daley

Thompson, Daley (1958-…), was one of the United Kingdom’s finest track and field stars. In both the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games, he won a gold medal in the decathlon, a strenuous, two-day competition consisting of 10 different athletics events. Thompson broke the world record for the highest decathlon score four times. He also won gold medals in the decathlon at the World Championships in 1983, the European Championships in 1982 and 1986, and the Commonwealth Games of 1978, 1982, and 1986.

Francis Morgan Daley Thompson was born on July 30, 1958, in London, to a Scottish mother and a Nigerian father. He competed in his first decathlon at the age of 16. He was undefeated in competition from 1978 to 1987. Thompson retired from track and field competition in 1992.
